My fondest memories of the music program at Torrington HS include playing in a string quartet with three other members of the class of 2011, singing in the chamber choir, and composing a piece of music for the orchestra, which was performed at the 2011 Farewell Concert. I was a bit shy in high school, and being a member of the music department - both in orchestra and choir - helped me meet people and grow more confident and social. Most importantly, Mr. Splettstoeszer’s suggestion that I write a piece for the orchestra during my senior year opened up the possibility of pursuing a career in composition, which has shaped the direction my life and education have taken ever since.
Dale Osterman (b. 1993) is a composer, musician, and writer from Torrington, Connecticut. He became involved with music at age nine, playing cello in school and going on to perform as a singer-songwriter before eventually writing his first “serious” work at the age of seventeen. Since then Dale has written numerous works for a plethora of mediums. He has written for chamber pieces, solo works, works for large ensembles including symphony orchestra, and electronic works, including a piece (Pangaea) that was choreographed for the Hartt school’s 2016 choreo-comp collaboration. Dale’s music is often characterized by close harmonies, involved rhythms, and an energy inspired both by popular styles and by the music of young contemporary composers. Lately, he has been interested in exploring texture, noise, and space in his music, and in seeking ways to employ sounds typically found in electronic music in acoustic settings.
Dale holds a Bachelor’s degree in Audio and Music Production from Western Connecticut State University and is currently attending the Hartt School of Music where he hopes to earn a Master’s degree in composition. He has studied cello with numerous teachers, including Harmon Steiner, Mariel Roberts, and Richard Vaudrey. While at WCSU he studied production with Edward Dzubak and Douglas O’Grady, and composition with Kevin Jay Isaacs. His composition teachers at the Hartt School have been Ken Steen and David Macbride.
As a cellist, Dale has performed with numerous groups and in solo performances. Orchestral engagements have included the Ives Orchestra in Danbury, the WCSU orchestra, the Hartt Symphony Orchestra, and the 2015 Next Festival of Emerging Artists, as well as numerous pit orchestras for theatrical performances. As a soloist, he premiered his piece Scorched Earth at the Hartt School’s Fall 2015 Public Works recital.
He is also a member of the Hartt School’s Composer’s Ensemble, a contemporary experimental group dedicated to performing new works by its members, and holds an assistantship directing and performing with the Composer’s Chorus. Both of these ensembles have performed works of Dale’s, including This Living Dream, The Sound of Sense, and H+ for man and machine. This Living Dream was one of the fist works of Dale’s that incorporated poetry that he wrote himself.
Upcoming performances of Dale’s music include the string quartet Flood, which will be read and workshopped by the Mivos Quartet at the Walden School’s June 2016 Creative Musician’s Retreat in Dublin, New Hampshire; and an as-of-yet unfinished work for solo violin that will be performed in November of 2016 in a concert by Hartt School violinists.
